alter your /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini in the way you like, be aware that the default ini-file is not for productional use.
here are some changes, which can help you to identify errors:

error_reporting = E_ALL&~E_STRICT
display_errors = On
display_startup_errors = On
error_log =
log_errors = On
post_max_size = 8M

the first option enables you to see every error php might could encounter. be sure that php can write on your specified log.
