to add a printer via cups

firstly you will need the driver for the printer (e.g. brother has a good base for their products)
then install the driver (on debian with dpkg for a *.deb-file)

# aptitude install cups

to install the cups-system, now you can connect to it via http://localhost:631
now edit the /etc/group-file and add your user after the group, which is noted in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf after SystemGroup. also be careful with the driver installation, maybe you should not use the –force option with dpkg to identify errors…
